LUKE 3 | Die-Rek
Luke 3:8 says, “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’.
For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones”.
The people justified themselves as being children of God because they were descendants of Abraham. Now Abraham was a blessed man, and was given a promise in Genesis that his land and descendants will multiply and be blessed (Gen 17:1-7). His name meant “The father of many nations”, but when God gave Abraham his blessing and said, “I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant”, it wasn’t so much talking about his physical descendants, but those who would follow his faith, and live the same way he lived: in obedience to God.
The Bible talks about knowing those who are followers of Jesus Christ by their fruits. As we continue to be obedient and abide in His word, the fruit will come naturally (John 15). Straight organic! No concentrate! It will be evident by the way we conduct ourselves. It will be evident in our speech, our behaviour, and the places we go. We begin to lose interest in things that are not pleasing to God because the closer we draw to Him the closer He draws to us and we become more like Him.
So how do we become children of God? When we confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that Jesus Christ is Lord, we are then adopted into His family and become His sons and daughters, His children, Royal Priesthood. All that belongs to Him, we then inherit and now belongs to us as well, that’s just how a covenant works. It’s great! Get to know your God, get to know your covenant, and live in your blessings.
